Context
Le Grand PoutineFest is a traveling culinary festival that has celebrated poutine in various cities across Quebec since 2014. In addition to offering a wide variety of poutines and beers from Quebec microbreweries, the event includes family activities and small and large-scale shows as part of its annual tour. With its mission to become completely zero waste, Le Grand PoutineFest aims to reduce its ecological footprint by adopting eco-responsible practices, thus reflecting its commitment to sustainable development.
Policy Objective
This eco-responsible policy defines priority actions to reduce the environmental and social impacts of each event, while maximizing local economic benefits. It also aims to raise awareness among participants, employees, and suppliers about good sustainability practices.
Scope
The policy applies to organizers, employees, suppliers, and participants of the Grand PoutineFest. It serves as a reference for all those involved in organizing and carrying out the activities.
Actions
PURCHASING
As part of the organization, suppliers are chosen to reduce their environmental impact and support the local economy. The following products, services and materials are always sourced locally, with the supplier closest to the event:
- Portable toilet rental services;
- Waste, recycling and composting container rental services;
- Propane suppliers;
- Cheese distributor;
FOOD AND WATER
Food is a central element of the event. To minimize food waste and promote local food, we implement the following practices:
- Plan food quantities based on attendance estimates to avoid waste;
- Prioritize local and organic foods;
- Take visitors' dietary restrictions into account by offering options that accommodate as many festival-goers as possible;
TRANSPORTATION AND ENERGY
Travel and energy consumption are inevitable, but we are committed to limiting their impact by promoting:
- The systematic use of propane generators at event sites to reduce our carbon footprint;
- Sites easily accessible by public transport;
- A 100% outdoor concept, thus reducing the use of electricity, heating and air conditioning;
- The selection of sites and suppliers with environmental certifications
WASTE MANAGEMENT
To minimize waste generated by the event, the Grand PoutineFest follows waste reduction principles. To this end, we have implemented:
- The absolute use of reusable tableware from all service, food or beverage stations;
- An internal control system to ensure that everything on site is recyclable, reusable, or compostable;
- A selective sorting station, with employees, for on-site recycling, composting and waste reduction;
- A goal of achieving zero waste status;
- No trash cans on site;
- 60% reduction in the use of waste containers since the implementation of reusable tableware;
- Any beverage in a returnable can is served without a glass;
- Recovery of all returnable containers;
- All reusable containers are washed with ecological detergents and equipment that uses as little water as possible;
COMMUNICATIONS AND AWARENESS
The Grand Poutine Fest is committed to communicating and raising participants' awareness of eco-responsible practices by implementing the following actions:
- Inform visitors of the sustainable initiatives deployed during the event using a new website (winter 2024-2025);
- Include a full part of its press relations efforts on the subject of its eco-responsible practices;
- Promote digital transmission of information to reduce paper use;
- Promote digital advertising;
- All signs are reusable from one event to another and from one year to another;
Monitoring and continuous improvement
Eco-responsible actions are monitored at each event, based on the criteria established in this policy. Areas for improvement are analyzed annually to optimize the policy and continue to progress towards even more environmentally friendly events.
By adopting these practices, Grand PoutineFest hopes to inspire and engage its community in the path of sustainable development, while offering an unforgettable festive experience.
